Braves Outlast Cubs Behind Yastrzemski, Dubón Late-Game Heroics

The Atlanta Braves finally broke through on Wednesday night at Truist Park, pushing across three crucial runs in the eighth inning to dispatch the Chicago Cubs 4-1 and move to 30 wins on the season. It wasn’t pretty, and it certainly wasn’t a masterclass in offensive efficiency, but sometimes in baseball you just need your veterans to show up when it matters most. Mike Yastrzemski and Mauricio Dubón did exactly that, delivering the knockout blows when the Cubs’ bullpen couldn’t hold the line.

This was a game that begged to be won by the visiting Cubs. Shota Imanaga was absolutely magnificent through seven innings, scattering just five hits while striking out six and allowing only two runs. The Japanese import did everything his team needed him to do, and for most of the night, it looked like it might be enough. But that’s the thing about baseball in May, especially in the postseason positioning games we’re starting to see take shape: one mistake, one missed opportunity, and suddenly the game gets away from you.

The Cubs’ Wasted Opportunity

Nico Hoerner gave Chicago life in the fifth with an RBI single that brought home Carson Kelly, tying the game at 1-1. That’s when the Cubs should have pounced. That’s when they should have capitalized on a Braves lineup that seemed listless and disconnected for most of the evening. Instead, they continued to flail away, getting nothing else going offensively. Drake Baldwin had put Atlanta ahead 1-0 with a solo home run in the fourth, but the Cubs had every opportunity to seize control of this ballgame and simply didn’t execute.

Imanaga did his part. Craig Counsell did his part. The Cubs just ran into a wall named Raisel Iglesias and a suddenly inspired Braves lineup in the eighth inning. That’s baseball, frustrating as it may be for Chicago fans who traveled south expecting better results.

Atlanta’s Bullpen Delivers When It Counts

Robert Suarez took over in the eighth for the Braves and immediately established dominance, striking out two of the three batters he faced while allowing just one hit. But the real story was what happened on offense. Yastrzemski lined a sharp double into center field that immediately shifted momentum, sending Michael Harris II across the plate. Then, with two outs and a chance to blow this thing open, Dubón connected on a fly ball that cleared the left field wall, plating two more and extending the lead to 4-1. That was the ballgame right there.

Iglesias came in for the save and did his job efficiently, though he wasn’t exactly dealing with overwhelming pressure at that point. The Braves had already seized control, and the Cubs’ bats had gone completely silent.

This loss stings for Chicago because they had every opportunity to take control of a division race that’s starting to get interesting down the stretch. Imanaga was superb, but superb pitching in May only matters if you can scratch out enough runs to support it. The Cubs couldn’t, and now they’re heading home having squandered a chance against an Atlanta team that’s clearly finding its stride. That’s the difference between teams that contend and teams that fade come September.
