Rays outlast Blue Jays in 10-inning thriller at Rogers Centre

The Tampa Bay Rays refused to fold against a furious Blue Jays comeback, escaping Rogers Centre with a 7-6 victory in 10 innings on Tuesday night. This was baseball at its most absurd and most beautiful, a see-saw affair that belonged in a playoff series, not a May regular season game in Toronto. The Rays looked destined for a comfortable win before the Blue Jays nearly stole it away in the seventh, only to watch their resilience run dry when it mattered most.

Shane McClanahan was the story through five innings, delivering five scoreless frames of dominant pitching against a lineup that had no answers for his stuff. The man was untouchable, fanning seven batters and looking like he’d hand the Rays another easy victory. Meanwhile, Tampa Bay’s lineup was doing what it does best, manufacturing runs through timely hitting. Cedric Mullins’ two-run single in the third and Ryan Vilade‘s solo bomb in the seventh appeared to have put this game to bed at 7-0.

The Seventh Inning Collapse That Wasn’t

Then came the seventh, and suddenly the Blue Jays looked alive. Not just alive, but desperate and dangerous in a way that made you believe they could actually pull this off. Jesus Sanchez’s RBI double started the bleeding. George Springer‘s single kept the momentum rolling. Then came Yohendrick Pinango, who absolutely ripped a two-run double that had the Rogers Centre crowd on their feet. Before anyone could catch their breath, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. poked a single through the infield to tie the game at 6-6. The Rays’ bullpen had imploded, and Toronto had clawed back from the brink of embarrassment.

But here’s where this game gets interesting. The Blue Jays couldn’t finish it. In the tenth inning, when victories are typically decided by who blinks first, Toronto’s pitching faltered. Taylor Walls’ clutch single scored Cedric Mullins with the go-ahead run. Then Jonathan Aranda added insurance with a sacrifice fly that scored Walls. The Rays, who had looked vulnerable just three innings earlier, suddenly looked composed and intentional.

Cleavinger Locks It Down

Garrett Cleavinger got his save in the tenth by doing exactly what closers should do in extra innings, nothing fancy, nothing complicated. One scoreless inning and it was over. The Blue Jays mounted one last push with Guerrero Jr. hitting a sacrifice fly to score Springer, but it was too little and came too late.

This loss stings for Toronto because they had every opportunity to steal this game. They did everything right in the seventh inning comeback. They made the Rays uncomfortable and forced mistakes. But baseball doesn’t care about moral victories or nearly-there performances. It cares about the final score, and the final score reads Tampa Bay 7, Toronto 6 in ten innings. The Rays showed the composure of a team that knows how to win tight games. The Blue Jays showed they have the talent to compete with anybody, but also showed they still need to learn how to finish.
