Skenes Dominates in Pirates’ Shutout Bid, Rockies Rally Too Late

Paul Skenes was absolutely dominant on Tuesday night at PNC Park, and frankly, the Colorado Rockies never had a chance. The Pirates’ ace throttled the Rockies with a near-perfect performance that had opposing hitters looking helpless and lost in the batter’s box. This wasn’t just a good start. This was the kind of outing that reminds you why Skenes was the consensus top pitching prospect in baseball.

Skenes took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, striking out 10 batters while walking none across eight spectacular innings. He surrendered just two hits all night, both coming after he’d already broken his own no-hitter bid. The Rockies’ lineup looked utterly befuddled against his arsenal. Five of his strikeouts came in a row at one point, and you could feel the frustration building in the Colorado dugout as pitch after pitch painted the corners or left hitters flailing.

Grinding Out Just Enough Offense

While Skenes was putting on a masterclass, the Pirates’ hitters were doing just enough to make it matter. The offense wasn’t flashy, but it was efficient, which is all you need when your starter is pitching like that. Nick Gonzales got the party started in the first inning with an RBI single that scored Oneil Cruz. Two runs later came off a Brandon Lowe single in the fifth, with Cruz scoring again. Bryan Reynolds tacked on another run in the seventh with his own RBI single, giving Pittsburgh a comfortable 3-0 cushion heading into the late innings.

The Pirates got outstanding production from the middle of their lineup. Oneil Cruz went 3-for-4 and scored twice, proving he’s fully healthy and locked in at the plate. This wasn’t a slugfest. This was baseball played with precision and purpose, exactly what you want when your pitcher is dealing like Skenes was dealing.

Rockies’ Ninth-Inning Consolation Prize

Michael Lorenzen wasn’t terrible for Colorado, posting five strikeouts over five innings while allowing just five hits and two earned runs. But against Skenes’ performance, even a respectable outing looked pedestrian. The Rockies’ bats were essentially silenced for eight innings, a damning indictment of their ability to keep pace with Pittsburgh’s elite arms.

Hunter Goodman did provide a spark in the ninth with an RBI double off Gregory Soto, scoring Jordan Beck and preventing the shutout. But one run on the night was pathetic offensive production, and it perfectly captured how thoroughly outmatched the Rockies were. Soto slammed the door with a save, but honestly, the game was over after Skenes’ first inning.

This was a statement performance from Skenes and the Pirates. Pittsburgh is building something special with this young ace, and if they keep getting performances like this from their ace, they’ll be in playoff contention sooner rather than later. The Rockies, meanwhile, will need to find a way to manufacture more runs consistently, because nights like this, where they can barely scratch across a run against quality pitching, aren’t going to cut it in a competitive league.
