Vientos Powers Mets Past D-Backs in 10-Inning Thriller
Sometimes baseball rewards patience, and on Friday night at Chase Field, the New York Mets showed exactly why you never count them out. Mark Vientos, who had already homered in the second inning, came through again in the 10th with a go-ahead double that sent the Mets to a 3-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks. It was a masterclass in clutch hitting from a player who is quietly becoming one of the most dangerous bats in the National League.
Pitching Decisions
Star Performers
This game was a pitcher’s duel for most of the evening, with both Nolan McLean for the Mets and Ryne Nelson for the Diamondbacks dealing effectively. McLean struck out six batters while Nelson fanned seven, a reminder that in May, when the weather is cool and the ball doesn’t carry as well, contact pitching still matters. The scoring was minimal until Vientos launched his fifth home run of the season in the top of the second inning, a fly ball to left-center that gave the Mets an early 1-0 lead.
Arizona, however, responded immediately in the bottom of the second when Nolan Arenado took a Nelson fastball and deposited it into left field for his sixth homer. The game was tied, and it stayed that way through nine innings of competitive baseball. This is where the Diamondbacks’ bullpen becomes the story, and not in a good way. Kevin Ginkel simply couldn’t hold the line when it mattered most.
Vientos Delivers When It Matters
The 10th inning belonged to the Mets. After Brett Baty reached base, Vientos stepped up and laced a double down the left field line that scored Baty easily. One run was enough, but Carson Benge, showing the kind of timely hitting that wins close games, followed with his own RBI double on a line drive to left-center to push the lead to 3-1. Suddenly, what had been a tight, tension-filled game was over before Arizona could even bat in the bottom of the inning.
Devin Williams, the Mets closer who has been dealing throughout the season, picked up the win for his work in the 10th, while Tobias Myers recorded the save by striking out two batters in the frame. This is the kind of baseball that wins playoff games, the kind where your best players show up when the spotlight is brightest. Vientos finished 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs, the clear difference-maker in this contest.
Another Heartbreaker for Arizona
For the Diamondbacks, this loss stings. Arenado’s solo shot kept them in the game, but Arizona’s bullpen simply didn’t have the horses when extra innings came calling. Ginkel couldn’t record an out in the 10th, a damning indictment of Arizona’s depth. When you can’t get through the ninth inning with your closer healthy and ready, you’re going to lose these kinds of games. The Mets, meanwhile, continue to show the resilience that good teams possess. This wasn’t the prettiest victory, but in baseball, 1-0 in the win column is all that matters.
