Bazzana’s Blast Lifts Guardians Past Twins in Friday Thriller

For one perfect moment on Friday night at Progressive Field, Travis Bazzana looked like he belonged in the conversation with the game’s elite young hitters. His first career home run, a 427-foot missile that screamed into the Cleveland sky in the bottom of the first inning, set the tone for what would become a gritty, back-and-forth battle between two teams that refused to quit. The Guardians ultimately won 6-4, and while the Twins had plenty of opportunities to steal this game, it was Bazzana’s power stroke and some late-inning execution that carried the day.

Bazzana Takes the Center Stage

Let’s be clear: Bazzana’s two-run homer in the first inning was not just a moment of significance for the young star, it was the defining blow of the evening. Following Rhys Hoskins’ sacrifice fly that plated Angel Martínez, Bazzana stepped up and delivered the kind of at-bat that reminds you why this kid was the prospect everyone was talking about. A 427-foot bomb to center field that had the Progressive Field crowd on its feet. Sure, it’s his first career home run, but the way he put it in play suggested it won’t be his last. This wasn’t luck. This was a prospect arriving.

Byron Buxton answered for Minnesota with a two-run shot of his own in the seventh inning, a fly ball to left-center that kept the Twins very much in the fight. Buxton was tremendous on Friday, going 3-for-5 with a home run and 2 RBIs. That’s the kind of performance that normally wins ballgames. But in this case, it wasn’t enough.

Late-Inning Execution Decides It

Connor Prielipp was actually solid for the Twins, allowing just one earned run over 5.0 innings with six strikeouts. The problem, however, was that his supporting cast couldn’t manufacture the decisive blow. Parker Messick was equally impressive for Cleveland, scattering seven hits over 5.2 innings while striking out seven. What separated the two pitching efforts wasn’t the quality, it was the situation.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Austin Hedges lined a sharp ground ball to second base that deflected off pitcher Anthony Banda. Travis Bazzana scored the go-ahead run, and suddenly, the Twins were chasing again. Cleveland’s bullpen, particularly Cade Smith‘s clean save inning, shut the door when it mattered most. That’s playoff-caliber baseball. That’s why you win games like this on Friday nights in May.

The Twins’ offense showed flashes. Austin Martin was 3-for-5 with some nifty defensive work. Ryan Jeffers drove in a run. But ultimately, Minnesota left too many runners on base and couldn’t break through when the pressure was highest. The Guardians, meanwhile, played small-ball early (Hoskins’ sacrifice fly) and then flexed their power muscle when they needed to. That’s the formula for winning ballgames.

On Friday night, Cleveland simply executed better down the stretch. Bazzana’s arrival as a legitimate force at the plate wasn’t just a feel-good storyline, it was the difference between winning and losing. The Twins will get another chance at this Guardians team, but on this night, superiority belonged to the home team.
