Rockies Rally Past Phillies in 11-Inning Thriller at Citizens Bank Park

If you’re looking for a reason to believe in baseball’s inherent drama, Friday night at Citizens Bank Park delivered it in spades. The Colorado Rockies scraped and clawed their way past the Philadelphia Phillies 9-7 in an 11-inning gut-wrencher that had all the hallmarks of a playoff game, except the Phillies left it on the table and the Rockies refused to fold.

This wasn’t a thing of beauty. This was baseball reduced to its most primal state: which team wanted it more when their tanks were empty and their bullpens were gasping for breath. And frankly, the Rockies wanted it more.

The Rockies’ Early Blitz Sets the Tone

Colorado came out swinging like they were playing with house money. After TJ Rumfield’s RBI groundout gave them an early 1-0 lead in the first, the Rockies exploded for five runs in the fourth inning and suddenly had a stranglehold on this game. Five runs poured across the plate. J.T. Realmuto’s RBI double, Brandon Marsh’s single, and Bryson Stott’s two-run double made it a ballgame again. Then Justin Crawford, the kid making his mark in the majors, absolutely obliterated a fastball for a three-run homer to tie things up.

For a moment, you thought the Phillies had it. For a shining, brief moment, the momentum was theirs. Brad Keller‘s short leash in the first inning should have been a warning sign of bullpen fragility, but when Crawford’s ball left the park, it felt like destiny was shifting toward the home team.

They were wrong.

Troy Johnston’s go-ahead double in the 11th inning proved to be the dagger. Jake McCarthy’s subsequent single added exclamation point, and suddenly the Rockies were on their way out of Philly with a victory that will sting the Phillies for days. Victor Vodnik, who only needed to throw 2.0 innings, earned the win. Juan Mejia closed it out with a 1.0 inning save.

This game had everything: power hitting, bullpen drama, clutch moments, failed comebacks. Hunter Goodman finished 4-for-5 with a homer. Tyler Freeman went deep and collected two hits. The Phillies’ Justin Crawford’s two-run blast off the bench wasn’t enough, and that might be the most frustrating takeaway for Philadelphia.

In the end, baseball rewarded the team that executed better in the late innings. The Rockies earned this one. The Phillies will wonder what might have been if they’d just held on through the eighth.
