Diamondbacks Dominate Pirates in Shutout, Rodriguez Masterful

The Pittsburgh Pirates came to Chase Field on Tuesday looking to steal a game in the desert. Instead, they got completely dismantled by a Diamondbacks team firing on all cylinders, losing 9-0 in a performance so lopsided it looked like a spring training game in February.

This wasn’t even a fair fight. Eduardo Rodriguez was absolutely dominant, surrendering just two hits across seven innings while striking out seven batters. The Pirates managed to put runners on base, sure, but Rodriguez had ice in his veins when it mattered most, walking three but never allowing a single run to score. That’s the kind of pitching that wins playoff games, folks. Meanwhile, Bubba Chandler got shelled, lasting only five innings and giving up two runs on two hits while issuing a concerning six walks. For a young arm, that kind of control problem is exactly the type of thing that keeps teams in the cellar.

Arizona’s offense was methodical and clinical in its destruction. They didn’t need to blow anything up early, instead chipping away with a sacrifice fly from Adrian Del Castillo in the opening inning that scored Ketel Marte, followed by an RBI double from Ildemaro Vargas to make it 2-0. That’s patient baseball, the kind of approach that eventually wears down opposing pitchers.

Sixth Inning Explosion Puts Game Away

D-backs score five in the 6th

The real damage came in the bottom of the sixth when Arizona absolutely broke the game open. Gabriel Moreno ripped an RBI double, then Geraldo Perdomo followed with a two-run double of his own. Ketel Marte reached on a fielder’s choice that scored another run, and Corbin Carroll added another with a sacrifice fly. Five runs in one inning. Pittsburgh’s defense was helpless, and Chandler had nothing left in the tank.

The Pirates’ bats were completely silent all night. Two hits. Two! This is a professional baseball team that managed exactly two base hits in nine innings against a respectable but not overpowering Rodriguez. You simply cannot win games when your offense is that dormant. Bryan Reynolds, typically a solid contributor, was invisible. The entire lineup looked overmatched and confused.

Eduardo Rodriguez twirls scoreless start in win

Rodriguez deserves all the plaudits here. Seven shutout innings on the road against a division rival is the kind of outing that goes in your mental highlight reel. He didn’t need to be perfect, didn’t need strikeouts on every pitch. He just executed his pitches in the zone and let Arizona’s defense do the work. That’s veteran professionalism.

Eduardo Rodriguez K's Nick Gonzales

By the time the eighth inning rolled around, this was essentially garbage time. Marte singled in another run, Del Castillo followed with an RBI single, and the final score of 9-0 felt almost merciful for the Pirates. This wasn’t a competitive baseball game after the third inning. It was target practice.

Pittsburgh needs to find out what went wrong with Chandler’s command and get their bats woken up, because this performance was embarrassing. Arizona showed exactly what a complete game looks like on Tuesday night. The Diamondbacks are the team to beat in this division right now.
