Vientos goes yard twice as Mets cruise past Angels

The New York Mets came to Anaheim on Sunday and reminded the Los Angeles Angels what happens when you let a hot hitter beat you with his sweet swing. Mark Vientos went absolutely nuclear, belting two home runs and driving in four runs as the Mets cruised to a 5-1 victory at Angel Stadium. This wasn’t a game decided by a single play or a close call. This was a beatdown, plain and simple, and the Angels had no answer for what the Mets brought to the table.

Vientos Takes Over the Game

Mark Vientos crushes two home runs for the Mets

Vientos was the story of the day, and honestly, there’s no other way to spin it. The man came to play on Sunday, and he left no doubt about who the best hitter on the field was. His first blast came in the fourth inning, a two-run shot that put the Mets ahead 2-1. Then, just when you thought the Angels might mount some kind of comeback, Vientos stepped up again in the eighth and crushed his second home run of the game, this one a two-run job that essentially put the game on ice. Four RBIs on two swings. That’s the kind of dominant performance that wins ballgames, and the Angels had absolutely nothing to counter it with.

You want to know what separates good teams from great ones? It’s when your star player shows up on the road and takes over a game when the pressure is on. Vientos did exactly that on Sunday. He wasn’t trying to do too much. He wasn’t chasing. He was just trusting his eye and his swing, and the results spoke for themselves. This is the kind of performance that makes you believe a team is built to win something.

Holmes Locks Down the Rotation

Clay Holmes strikes out six vs. Angels

While Vientos was stealing headlines with his power display, don’t sleep on what Clay Holmes did from the mound. The Mets’ starter was absolutely brilliant, scattering four hits over 6.2 innings while striking out six and walking three. He only allowed one run, which came on Jorge Soler‘s first-inning RBI single. That’s the kind of pitching you need on the road against a team with Mike Trout in the lineup. Holmes kept the Angels off balance all day long, and when combined with Vientos’ fireworks, it was simply too much for Los Angeles to overcome.

The Angels’ Jack Kochanowicz wasn’t bad, punching out six of his own, but he couldn’t keep pace with the Mets’ assault. After giving up two runs in the fourth on Vientos’ first home run, Kochanowicz was essentially done. The game was decided by that point, and the Angels were just playing out the string.

Defense Makes the Difference

Carson Benge's leaping catch at the wall

Beyond the hitting and pitching, Carson Benge showed up defensively in a major way for the Mets. His diving catches and acrobatic plays kept the Angels’ offense completely stifled. When you’ve got pitching that good, a superstar hitter in Vientos, and defense that’s sharp, you’re going to win ballgames. The Mets checked every box on Sunday, and that’s exactly what they needed to do to steal one on the road.

Carson Benge's RBI double

This was a complete performance by New York. They came into enemy territory and showed the Angels that they’re simply a better team right now. The Mets are building something special, and performances like this on Sunday are exactly what championship-caliber teams do.
