On the flip side, Chris Bassitt showed exactly how pitching is supposed to look on Thursday. The Orioles’ right-hander went 6.2 innings, allowing just one earned run on seven hits while striking out seven Astros batters. He gave Baltimore’s offense all the runway it needed to build an insurmountable lead. Bassitt didn’t need to be perfect, just efficient and competitive. Mission accomplished.

The Astros made a pathetic attempt at a comeback in the eighth inning, scoring twice on singles by Christian Vazquez and Yainer Diaz. It was too little, too late, a case of closing the barn door after the horses had already bolted to Baltimore County.

Isaac Paredes had a decent night at the plate for Houston, going 3-for-4, but one good performance doesn’t rescue a team that got absolutely shelled by grand slams and shoddy pitching. The Astros couldn’t have scripted a worse Thursday night performance if they’d tried. They came to Camden Yards looking to make a statement in the AL East, and instead they got schooled by a Baltimore team that looks increasingly dangerous as we head deeper into the season.
