Orioles Ground Astros Behind Baz, Alonso’s Power

The Baltimore Orioles reminded the Houston Astros on Tuesday night that Camden Yards remains one of baseball’s most unforgiving venues, dispatching their visitors 5-3 behind a masterclass pitching performance from Shane Baz and timely hitting that capitalized on early Houston mistakes. This wasn’t a defensive slugfest. This was disciplined baseball from a team finally clicking at the right moment.

Baz was absolutely tremendous, surrendering just one earned run across 5.2 innings while striking out six and walking only one. For a pitcher in search of his first win with the Orioles, this outing was exactly the kind of statement performance that changes narratives. Houston’s hitters looked thoroughly uncomfortable against his arsenal, and when the Astros did make contact, they couldn’t generate anything meaningful until it was far too late.

Early Damage Sets the Tone

The Orioles wasted no time punishing Houston starter Kai-Wei Teng, who lasted a pathetic 3.0 innings and surrendered five hits and two earned runs without recording a single walk. In the bottom of the first, Gunnar Henderson scored on an Adley Rutschman line drive single to left, and Samuel Basallo followed with a sharp double down the line that brought Rutschman home. That’s two runs in the opening frame, and frankly, it should have been enough to decide this game right there. The Astros’ pitching was a mess early, and the Orioles made them pay.

Samuel Basallo's RBI double

Houston scraped together a run in the fifth when Brice Matthews launched a solo homer to right-center, proving he could at least make contact. Matthews finished 3-for-4 with that blast, so credit to him for being the only Astro capable of generating consistent offensive pressure. But one run doesn’t cut it against a team that knows how to finish.

Alonso Delivers When It Matters

Pete Alonso's two-run homer (4)

Pete Alonso’s two-run blast in the bottom of the fifth effectively put this game on ice. The man is playing some genuinely impressive baseball right now, and that particular swing off the bat looked like someone who understands exactly what kind of pitcher he’s facing. With Taylor Ward on base, Alonso’s fly ball to right-center made it 4-1 Orioles, and suddenly Houston was staring down a mountain they couldn’t climb. One hit, one home run, two RBIs. That’s efficiency. That’s exactly what Pete Alonso was brought to Baltimore to provide.

The Astros mounted a desperate comeback attempt in the eighth, with Dustin Harris tripling sharply to right and scoring on a Brice Matthews single. That made it 4-3, and for a moment, the game felt slightly more competitive. But the Orioles had already done enough, and Adley Rutschman’s seventh-inning single had extended Baltimore’s lead to 5-3. Ryan Helsley closed out the ninth without incident, earning a clean save.

Ryan Helsley earns the save

This victory belongs to Baltimore’s pitching depth and its ability to strike first. Shane Baz looks like he’s finally figured something out in an Orioles uniform, and if that trend continues, Houston just got a preview of what this franchise can look like when everything aligns. The Astros looked sloppy and undisciplined. They deserve exactly what they got.
