Tatis Delivers in Padres’ Win; Mariners’ Castillo Struggles Early

The San Diego Padres showed up Thursday night with their bats loaded and their pitching sharp, dispatching the Seattle Mariners 5-2 in a game that never felt close after the second inning. This was a masterclass in taking advantage of early opportunities, and frankly, the Mariners never recovered from Luis Castillo‘s shaky start.

Buehler’s Command and an Early Onslaught

Walker Buehler looked as good as advertised on Thursday, striking out seven batters over five innings while allowing just two runs on five hits. More importantly, he command the zone like a man possessed, issuing only one walk. The Padres’ offense did the heavy lifting early, however, manufacturing four runs in the bottom of the second inning off Castillo, who appeared scattered and unable to locate his fastball. Luis Campusano started the barrage with an RBI single, followed by Ramón Laureano’s productive groundout. Then Fernando Tatis Jr. delivered the dagger with a sharp two-run single that sent two runs scurrying across the plate and essentially put this game to bed before the third inning even arrived.

That’s the kind of offensive efficiency that wins ballgames in April and October alike. The Padres didn’t need to manufacture some elaborate scoring sequence. They just put the ball in play and made the Mariners pay.

Mariners Fight Back, But It’s Too Little, Too Late

To Seattle’s credit, they didn’t go quietly into the night. In the sixth inning, Cal Raleigh and Julio Rodríguez each delivered RBI singles to cut the deficit to three runs at 4-2. For a moment, there was genuine hope that the Mariners might stage a late-inning comeback. That hope evaporated in the seventh when Manny Machado singled home Fernando Tatis Jr. to extend the Padres’ lead back to two runs. Mason Miller then slammed the door with a masterful save, striking out the side and keeping the Mariners completely off the board in the final two innings.

Castillo’s performance was genuinely disappointing. Five and one-third innings, seven hits, and three walks is not the kind of outing you expect from a pitcher of his caliber, especially against a Padres lineup that certainly has weaknesses but showed none of them on Thursday. He did strike out three, which provided minor solace, but the damage was done early and often.

What made this loss particularly frustrating for Seattle is that it was entirely preventable. The Mariners’ defense was actually sharp throughout the evening, with several highlight-reel plays keeping them in the game longer than their offense deserved. But good defense cannot overcome bad pitching and untimely offense, and that’s precisely what happened Thursday night at Petco Park.

The Padres are quietly building something dangerous in 2026. With Tatis swinging the bat like a man possessed and the pitching staff showing real depth, San Diego looks like a genuine contender in the National League West. The Mariners, meanwhile, need to figure out why Castillo looked so ordinary and whether they can generate more consistent offensive production moving forward. Thursday’s loss won’t define their season, but it certainly stung.
