Pirates Blast Past Reds Behind Cruz’s Two-Homer Night

The Pittsburgh Pirates came to Great American Ball Park on Tuesday and reminded the Cincinnati Reds exactly why you don’t let the other team get hot early. In what amounted to a clinic on offensive efficiency, the Buccos jumped all over Brandon Williamson in the second inning and never looked back, cruising to an 8-3 victory that exposed just how much work the Reds still need to do defensively and on the mound.

This game was decided before most fans had finished their hot dogs. Williamson lasted just 4.2 innings, giving up six runs on six hits while issuing two walks. The damage came fast and furious in the second, when the Pirates turned Cincinnati’s pitching into batting practice. Nick Yorke opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly, but the real statement came courtesy of Ryan O'Hearn‘s three-run blast that made it 4-0 faster than you could say “rebuilding year.” Bryan Reynolds piled on with a solo shot moments later, and just like that, the Reds were staring at a 5-0 deficit before we’d even gotten to the stretch.

Cruz Takes Over: Two Home Runs, Three RBIs

But if you thought the second inning was the story, Oneil Cruz had other ideas. The shortstop was a man on a mission Tuesday night, launching two home runs and driving in three runs to lead an offensive onslaught that never gave Cincinnati breathing room. His first came in the fourth inning, a straightforward solo shot that extended Pittsburgh’s lead. His second, a 444-foot moonshot in the ninth, was the kind of absolute pummeling that only serves to demoralize a struggling lineup.

What made Cruz’s performance even more impressive was the consistency. Three hits in four at-bats against a Reds pitching staff that desperately needed to show it could compete. Instead, Cruz simply punished every mistake Williamson and company threw at him, the kind of dominant two-homer night that could spark a Pirates offense looking to make some noise.

Pirates’ Pitching Holds Firm Despite Late Reds Rally

Credit should also go to Yohan Ramirez, who picked up the win with 0.2 innings of scoreless relief. While it wasn’t exactly a Cy Young performance, it got the job done. The Pirates held Cincinnati off the board for most of the evening, maintaining control until the eighth inning when the Reds finally woke up with back-to-back home runs from Elly De La Cruz and Sal Stewart. It was too little, too late, a consolation prize for a Cincinnati team that got outmuscled and outthought from the opening pitch.

The Reds can hang their hats on De La Cruz’s two-hit performance and those late-inning blasts, but Tuesday belonged entirely to Pittsburgh. This wasn’t some nail-biter decided by a single swing or a diving catch. This was a reminder that in baseball, some nights one team simply plays better, hits better, and executes better. The Pirates did all three.
