Dillon Dingler piled on with another single moments later to extend the lead to 5-2, and that was all she wrote.

Credit where it’s due: McGonigle’s at-bat was the kind of plate appearance that wins ball games. Ten pitches. In a game decided by three runs, those two-RBI single matters more than all the fielding gems Jackson Merrill provided in left field.

Enmanuel De Jesus and Kenley Jansen closed this thing out efficiently, combining for two scoreless innings with four strikeouts and no walks. De Jesus threw just one inning but struck out two, and Jansen, the closer, was absolutely untouchable in the ninth, striking out three batters without allowing a ball into play. This is what separates teams that make the playoffs from teams that don’t: bullpen depth when it matters.

Estrada’s Implosion Decides It

On the flip side, Jeremiah Estrada‘s collapse in whatever inning he finally exited was historically bad. The numbers tell the story: 0.2 innings pitched, four earned runs, three walks, two strikeouts. That’s not pitching. That’s a crime against baseball itself. For a Padres team that was supposed to compete in the NL West, this kind of bullpen failure is exactly the type of performance that derails seasons.

The Tigers aren’t the most talented team in baseball. They aren’t even the most talented team in the AL Central. But on Friday night at Petco Park, they were the team that didn’t quit, the team that stayed patient, and the team that capitalized when their moment came.
